Hemiloricaria teffeana

Brazil

Hemiloricaria teffeana is a member of the “Prachthexenwelse” gang, which in short means the most beautiful Stickfish species. H.teffeana is found in clear- and blackwater rivers, with acidic water values. In the hobby this is a very rare fish, and because it’s not allowed for export from Brazil, only sporadic imports as by-catches reach us. Hopefully, they will eventually be bred in numbers that will allow it to spread further among fans of Stickfishes. They are best kept in tanks without too much competition, as they live very calm and secluded lives and cannot compete well for food. Breeding H.teffeana is very much a possibility, but only if the water parameters are correct will the breeding process be successful.

Facts:

Name: Hemiloricaria teffeana (Steindachner, 1879)

Trade names: Tefe Whiptail

Origin: Rio Tefe, Rio Madeira, Rio Preto, Rio Negro, Brazil.

Maximum TL: 15 cm / 6''

Males develop short “beard” on their cheeks. These fish should be given calm surroundings with both open sand areas and shelter under roots and some hardy plants that will survive in the dim environment preferred by H.teffeana. Breeding is rare, and since it's a black water species it will need nutrient-poor, acidic water to thrive enough to enter breeding mode. Males often prefer tubes, but also caves with one opening for breeding. The eggs are green.
