Peckoltia sp. L209
This Peckoltia was first imported to Mimbon Aquarium in Cologne, Germany in 1995. It was never established in the hobby, but in recent years it has resurfaced in the trade. It has been given other aliases, such as Peckoltia sp. “Red Tiger”, since L209 was a very scarcely known species to begin with. It has now been bred in captivity, and turns out to be a very beautiful Peckoltia species that should be possible to maintain in the hobby due to it’s appealing looks. It’s however not allowed for export from Brazil, so stock will probably remain limited.

L209 is quite typically looking for a Peckoltia, with broad black bands on a pale background. It’s necessary to keep track of the origin of the fish when acquired, to avoid any mix-ups.
Often wild fish needs some proper care and feeding to regain their strength and vitality, and when they are happy and relaxed they will show off a beautiful orange colour in the fins. Stressed individuals are pale with slightly washed out markings. L209 is an omnivore, so a varied diet is required. After a period of mainteance and conditioning the fish should be possible to breed in typical Peckoltia manor. Clean, warm water with good movement and a tank furnished with decent caves and other hiding places makes the fish feel relaxed, and the males will eventually show off some impressive odontodal growth.
